20 Indian soldiers killed in clashes with Chinese troops, US media

New Delhi: At least 20 Indian soldiers have been killed in clashes with Chinese troops in the Himalayas.

According to US media reports, the deaths of Indian soldiers took place in the mountainous region of Ladakh, where India and China have a disputed but mostly peaceful border.

India and China, the two most populous nations in the world, are both emerging powers that see each other as rivals. Apart from the war in 1962, they had mostly held talks instead of escalating from time to time, but now tensions between the two countries have increased in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Xiaoli Jian said in a statement that Indian troops had violated the border a day earlier. He said that during the border violation, Indian forces attacked Chinese military personnel and spread provocation.
